After four years of deliberating, Barrett’s Group decided that a construction specific accounting system could deliver significant ROI over generic software.
Established in 1995, the Barrett’s Group of companies are some of the most well-respected in the field of glass production and installation. Comprising of London Toughening Ltd and Sekon Glassworks Ltd, the firm boasts a number of high profile clients across corporate, leisure, education, government and retail sectors. They chose Evolution M to replace a generic Sage system, and it is used by their accounts, production and estimating teams – with plans to extend its use to the contracting team.
When financial controller Maria Demetriou joined the organisation, a generic Sage accounts system was in place. Having used Integrity’s Evolution construction accounting software in a previous company, Maria was fully aware of the benefits such a system could bring to Barrett’s. After four years, Maria had convinced MD Tony Barrett who agreed to consider what benefits a construction-specific accounting system might bring. Ideally, the business required accounting software that could provide full job-costing on its larger contracts, manage applications and demonstrate enough efficiency savings to justify the cost of investment.
Multiple solutions under one roof
Integrity’s Evolution M was put through its paces against two other potential contenders, but was selected over them after demonstrations showed that it could deliver a fully integrated solution with a user-friendly interface.
As per their requirements, Evolution M allows Barrett’s to fully manage job costings, even linking specific purchase orders to contracts so that profit and loss reports can be managed on a job by job basis. Beyond these original requirements, the organisation has found a number of different features extremely useful: all communication trails relating to specific contracts, including invoices, orders and emails, can be tracked and referred to as evidence; production teams can raise specific purchase orders; estimating teams can load contracts directly into the system. Additionally, the system allows direct imports of costs through integration with a separate in-house system. “Everyone who has used Evolution M within our organisation has commented on its usability,” says Maria. “The system is fast, too; just ‘bang’, and the information is there.”
Looking to the future
Maria is pleased that the system has been able to stand up to economic scrutiny. “I’d estimate that we’re only using around 40% of the system’s capabilities, but that in itself is enough to demonstrate significant ROI through efficiency savings. As everything is integrated, we plan to expand our use as the company grows – possibly extending its use to the contracts team as it will definitely make their lives easier and provide them information they’ll invariably find useful.”
